Human rights activist and 2027 African Action Congress Presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has demanded the release and withdrawal of charges filed against the arrested ‘Tinubu Must Go Movement’ protesters in Borno State.
NPO Reported that five members of the movement were yesterday apprehended in Maiduguri for wearing clothes branded with the ‘Tinubu Must Go’ inscription.
The Borno Police Command had claimed arresting them over alleged plot to incite civil unrest in the state.
Reacting in a statement issued on his official X handle on Wednesday, Sowore condemned the arrest.
The Sahara Reporters publisher described it as a cowardly act allegedly orchestrated by the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.
‘I wholeheartedly condemn the unlawful arrest, humiliation, and detention of these citizens for freely expressing their political opposition to the failed Tinubu regime in Borno State. I learnt that this cowardly act was engineered by the APC Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, with the aid of the Nigerian Police.
‘These citizens were subsequently secretly arraigned before a magistrate and remanded in prison. Those unjustly detained are: Ba’ana Grema Mustapha Abba Abacha Muhammed Ali Adam Umar Gubio Abdulhamid Mohammed.’ He wrote.
Sowore demanded the charges against them be dropped immediately with the protesters released.
‘The charges against them must be dropped immediately, and all five citizens must be released from this unjust detention.
‘Political opposition is not a crime. Peaceful expression is not a crime. Nigerians must never be imprisoned simply for opposing those in power.’ He added.
