Human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has on Tuesday led protest to the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) Directorate headquarters in Abuja over the scheme’s denial of certificate to embattle Corp member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye.
NPO Reported that Raye, who served in Lagos, had in a post on her social media handle cried out after the Eti-Osa Local Government Inspector, Mrs. Veronica Agbele, seized her certificate after the 2024 Batch B Passing Out Parade.
The development had triggered public outrage with her viral video where she called President Bola Tinubu a ‘Terrible President’ cited as reason behind the extension of her service year.
NYSC had in reaction claimed to have withheld the Corp member’s certificate for being absent for biometric clearance with her service year extended by two months.
While Raye’s legal counsel, Inibehe Effiong, had on Monday accused the NYSC of lying, the human rights lawyer was seen alongside Sowore at the NYSC headquarters located at Tigris Crescent, Wuse area of Abuja.
As captured in a video shared on X, the duo were granted access into the headquarters where they were challenged for recording.
Sowore however held that the headquarters is a public office as he approached a military official, requesting to see the NYSC DG, Brig. Gen. Kunle Nafiu.
While it is yet-to-be confirmed if he was allowed to see the NYSC DG, Sowore in his address to newsmen held that people cannot be trusted with power.
“When people come to power in Nigeria, don’t trust them. It is that power that becomes their character and absolute power is something that is native to Nigeria.” he said.
