Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has pleaded not guilty to the cybercrime charge filed against him by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
Sowore had appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday following his arraignment on a three-count charge bordering on alleged calling of Egbetokun an “illegal IGP”
NPO Reports that the IGP had accused Sowore of calling him illegal IGP on series of posts on his verified X handle.
As contained in the charge sheet disclosed by Sowore yesterday, the posts which were traced back to December 2024 allegedly contravened the section 24(I)(b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, ETC) Act, 2015 as Amended (2024) and punishable under section 24(2)(c) (ii) of the same Act.
Recall that the Sahara Reporters publisher was, on Monday, invited by the Force Intelligence Department (FID) over alleged intimidation of police officers.
Following the interrogation, the activist was detained after rejecting the bail conditions offered by the Police Force.
This sparked protest by the #TakeitBack movement yesterday as they demanded for Sowore’s release.
