House of Representatives Speaker who led the final peace deal with universities teachers say the suspension of strike is not yet sign for Uhuru
Hours after the suspension of the eight months old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has said the suspension does not indicate that all issues bordering on funding and others have been resolved.
The Speaker’s assertion collated with that of the President of the Union, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, who said that the suspension of the strike does not mean that issues demanded by the union had been satisfactorily addressed.
“That the ASUU strike has been suspended makes me happy but we must not rest on our oars. Instead, let this be a call to action for the government, universities, unions, and citizens to begin the critical conversation about the future of public tertiary education in the country,'” he said Friday evening.
The union had announced its suspension of the strike after the intervention by the lower chamber of the National Assembly.
This was after the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu and his Labour and Productivity Counterpart, Chris Ngige, had failed to resolve the matter.
“I assure you that this is an objective the House of Representatives will pursue with dedication and determination,” he said
He urged the affected students not to be discouraged by the current challenges in the country’s educational sector adding that achieving their dreams should be their watchword
He said,”I wish our young people Godspeed as they return to school. I encourage them to ensure that the disruption to the academic calendar does not deter them from pursuing their ambitions and achieving their best dream.
“May God bless and keep you and God bless our Federal Republic of Nigeria,”he prayed
