A Syrian civil defence group says it has deployed specialist emergency teams to Saydnaya prison following reports that inmates are being detained in underground cells.
The White Helmets says, so far, it has “not found any of the secret doors being talked about” – but will continue searching with the help of people “who know the prison’s entrances and secret passages”.
Efforts are continuing in Syria’s capital Damascus to free prisoners after former president Bashar al-Assad’s regime was overthrown by rebels on Sunday – catch up on what happened over the weekend.
Assad, who’s now reported to be in Russia where he’s been granted asylum, fled after rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) took control of Damascus.
