President Bola Tinubu has put a phone call through to Nigerian-born British former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following the tragic accident in Ogun State involving the boxer and four of his associates.
NPO Reported that Joshua had on Monday escaped death by whisker after a Lexus jeep conveying the boxer rammed into a stationary truck along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
While he was rescued with minor injuries, two of Joshua’s associates reported to be his coach and a close friend lost their lives in the crash.
In the wake of the accident, Tinubu reached out to the boxer and his mother.
The President, as quoted in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed speaking with Joshua who confirmed that he is receiving the best care in the hospital he was taken to.
While condoling the boxer over the loss of his associates, Tinubu further disclosed speaking with Joshua’s mother and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with the family.
“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital.
“I also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call.
“Additionally, I spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with them. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention.” Tinubu was quoted to have said.
In an earlier statement in his personal X handle, Tinubu—who is currently abroad—expressed profound sympathy for the boxer over the accident.
He wished Joshua speedy recovery while calling on Nigerians to support and encourage the boxer.
“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride.
“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.
“I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.” He wrote.
