Signs Commemorative Treaty

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as he signed a commemorative treaty in honour of the original treaty which established the economic bloc.
NPO Reported that the President and ECOWAS Chairman had arrived at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island, Lagos, for the ECOWAS 50th anniversary.
Joined by other leaders ECOWAS leaders, Tinubu, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to the treaty which created the bloc in 1975.

Tinubu signed the commemorative treaty at the NIIA Conference Chamber where the original treaty was also signed by the former military Head of States, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) and other West African leaders at the time.
As captured in Onanuga’s post, Gowon who is the only surviving leader amongst other that signed the original treaty was also present at the chamber in honour of ECOWAS 50th anniversary.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other ECOWAS leaders reaffirm their commitment to the treaty creating the economic bloc 50 years ago.
“The commemorative treaty was signed Wednesday at the Conference Chamber of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs( NIIA) in Lagos, where the journey began in 1975.
“General Yakubu Gowon, who attended the Lagos event is the only surviving leader, who signed the original treaty.” The President’s spokesperson wrote.
