A two-years-old toddler has been crushed to death after a yet-to-be identified driver rammed vehicle into pedestrians in Edo state.
This was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Edo Police Command’s spokesman, CSP Moses Yamu.
According to the statement, the tragic incident occurred around 5:30pm at the Ring Road area of Benini-City
The incident, which involved a white Vannette bus with the registration number BEN 406 YA, rammed into some pedestrian while attempting to evade arrest by members of the Edo State Public Safety Response.
The driver, who is currently at large, crushed the two-year-old girl in the process while her mother is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Operatives of the Esigie Divisional Headquarters led by the Divisional Traffic Officer had, according to the statemengt, swiftly got to the scene to manage the situation.
The operatives would rescue a member of the Public Safety Response accused by angry mob of causing the accident.
While the official was taken into custody for investigation, the toddler was rushed to the hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
ThePolice, however, assured that investigation is ongoing as well as effort to identify and arrest the driver who fled the scene.
Other records of the accident were reportedly taken as well as pictorial evidence to aid in establishing the cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, urged all motorists to observe all traffic rules, obey constituted authorities and exercise patience while on the road.
She maintained that every road user has the responsibility to protect his/her life and that of every other road user by obeying established road safety protocols.
