No fewer than 21 Kano State athletes have died in tragic road crash while returning from the 22nd National Sports Festival held in Ogun state.
The athletes had departed the host state following the conclusion of the festival yesterday.
Unfortunately, the team’s bus would be involved in the tragic accident which according to a post shared on X occured around 8am along Dakka Tsale bridge in Garum Malam local government area of Kano State.
The bus had reportedly overturned after encountering a pothole on the road.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, said many other athletes sustained various degree of injuries following the fatal accident on Saturday.
According to him, the bus conveying 30 athletes fell from the bridge, leading to the death of the athletes which he initially claimed to be 19.
Also confirming the tragic incident was the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran.
The FRSC spokesperson could however not confirm the number of deaths and injured persons, stressing that the corps was just briefed.
