WBA Gold Cruiserweight Champion, Paul Bamba, has reportedly passed away just six days after winning the title.
As confirmed in a joint statement issued by the family and his management team, the 35-year-old boxer died on Friday, only six days after his victory over Rogelio Medina Luna in New Jersey.
Bamba’s victory at the December 21st bout saw him crowned the WBA Gold cruiserweight champion, to mark a big milestone in his career.
According to reports, the win was a remarkable feat it for his management company as he was the first signee of the company owned by popular US singer Ne-Yo.
While the cause of his death has not yet been disclosed, Ne-Yo, along with the Bamba family, expressed their sadness with the shocking passing of the boxer in the joint statement.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,” the statement read via TNT Sports.
The statement continued, “He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything, he was a tremendous individual who inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination.
“We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief.”
Bamba’s win against Medina Luna, a former super middleweight title contender, reportedly extended his professional record to 19-3.
Medina Luna was forced to retire after six rounds.
Also significant in the late boxer’s career was his scheduled fight with Tommy Fury, brother of Tyson Fury on November 2022.
Unfortunately, the bout was cancelled due to weight issues.
