The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of two people with two others severely injured in a fatal road accident involving a truck and multiple tricycles in Ibadan, the state’s capital city.
NPO Reported that the truck suspected to have suffered from brake failure had on Tuesday rammed into motorists and pedestrians in Beere area of Ibadan.
Video of the incident shared on X showed one of the injured victims with a severed leg being evacuated from the scene by first responders as he writhes in pain.
Confirming the development in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, the Oyo Police Command disclosed that the truck belonging to Bovas Oil lost control along Oje Market axis and rammed into the motorists and pedestrians, killing a man and woman in the process.
However, the driver was reported to have fled the scene and is currently at large as the police commence full investigation into the incident.
“Preliminary findings reveal that the incident occurred when a Mack truck belonging to Bovas Oil lost control while in motion from the Beere area and subsequently crashed along the Oje Market axis, resulting in the unfortunate death of a man and a woman, injuring two other persons, and damaging five tricycles as well as a Toyota Camry car.
“The truck was driven by a male adult who is currently at large.
“Immediately the incident occurred, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Police Command, directed the Divisional Police Officer, Mapo Division, to coordinate and collaborate with other security agencies to bring the situation under control.
“In compliance, the DPO promptly mobilized to the scene, facilitated the rescue and evacuation of the injured victims to the hospital, ensured the removal of the deceased to the mortuary, and secured all affected properties at the station for safekeeping.
“In view of the foregoing, the Command has commenced a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident and is making concerted efforts to apprehend the fleeing driver.” The statement partly read.
The Oyo Police Command urged members of the public to remain calm.
It called for their corporation through provision of any useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
The Command also reiterated the importance of strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
