The legislative arm of the Students’ Union Council has suspended it union’s president, Mr. Faji Tobiloba.
This was dislcosed during an emergency sitting on Saturday at the University of Ilorin, stating that he will be suspended for 60 working days.
The council accused him of breaching the union’s compendium, unlawfully collecting funds, and committing other offenses during his tenure.
The motion for Mr. Faji’s suspension was deliberated by 41 members of the Students Senate Council, with 23 voting in favor of the suspension, while some abstained from voting.
The financial secretary submitted a letter detailing irregularities from the office of the Students’ Union President, which was read aloud by the Senate Clerk.
During the sitting, the council also discussed Mr. Faji’s use of his personal social media accounts /pages to disseminate information about the union.
The council claimed that the Students Union Public Relations Officer was designated for such duties, and all information should be channeled through the union’s social media accounts.
However, no decision was made on this matter.
Following the suspension, the council conferred all powers, responsibilities, and leadership roles of the Students’ Union President onto his Deputy, Mrs. Arinola, for the duration of Mr. Faji’s suspension.
The council is expected to forward its sitting resolution, which may contain Mr. Faji’s offenses, to the university management. Mr. Faji walked out of the sitting, which is said to be described as “gross misconduct” from his position.
The suspension of Mr. Faji is expected to last for 60 working days.
Therefore, the vice-president of the union, Mrs. Arinola will act as the interim President of the Students’ Union.
