A 32-year-old Uruguayan striker, Mathías Acuña, has reportedly committed suicide amid ongoing investigation over alleged domestic abuse of ex-partner.
Acuña, who played for Ecuadorian club Mushuc Runa, was found dead on the 4th of January in his hotel room in Ambato, Ecuador, approximately 100 kilometres from Quito.
According to reports, authorities identified suicide as the likely cause of death.
According to Pulse Sport, the striker was under investigation for alleged domestic abuse against his ex-partner, a case that had reportedly resulted in him being fitted with an electronic tracking bracelet.
This device was intended to monitor his movements, a measure imposed less than a month before his death.
The accusations, coupled with the invasive surveillance, appear to have taken a toll on Acuña’s mental health.
However, details surrounding his passing remain under investigation.
In a heartfelt statement shared on X, Mushuc Runa Sporting Club expressed its sorrow over the passing of the striker.
“We deeply regret the sensitive death of Mathías Acuña. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this irreparable loss. May he rest in peace.” The statement read.
Acuña singed for Mushuc Runa in July 2024, after several stints in Uruguay, Greece, (where he played for Larissa and PAS Lamia), and other clubs in his home country.
Prior to becoming a footballer, Acuña worked as a delivery man and musician.
His industrious career would however, be married with the legal troubles which took toll on him.
