A United States- based Nigerian Don, Prof. Omolade Adunbi, has recounted how he was arrested and detained alongside late spokesperson to the Ogun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tunde Oladunjoye, and others.
NPO Reported that Oladunjoye passed away in the United Kingdom after a prolonged illness.
Reacting to the Osun APC Publicity Secretary’s demise in a statement made available to NPO Reports on Sunday, Prof. Adunbi expressed his sadness over Oladunjoye’s death.
He recounted his time in detention with the late Oladunjoye following their arrest under Maj. Gen. Sani Abacha’s military regime.
The University of Michigan don described Oladunjoye as a fervent believer in social justice and democratic values.
“Wow! This is really sad. I was detained alongside himself, Tunde Akanni and others in January 1996 when I on behalf of the CLO and other pro-democracy groups, organized the first Nigeria pro democracy summit in Jos plateau state to challenge the Abacha junta.
“The SSS, military and police came to disrupt the event and arrested some of us. In the midst of the chaos, the SSS made it clear it was me they were looking for because I signed the invitation letters without knowing that I was among those arrested.
“Tunde and others remained resolute and never disclosed that I was among the arrested comrades. I had given a fake name when we were arrested. We ended up spending many days in detention.
“When we complained about the conditions of our cell, the SSS reminded us that the cell where we were kept was once occupied by Obasanjo during the phantom coup trial.
“Tunde was such a gentleman and a fervent believer in social justice and democratic values. May Allah grant him aljanna firdaus.” Prof. Adunbi wrote.
