Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has faulted the arrest and detention of Nigerian social media influencer, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan.
The activist was arrested on Friday by operatives of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and had since been in the commission’s custody.
With intensified agitation for his release by protesters the EFCC was compelled to release a statement confirming the arrest and detention of the activist.
The EFCC claimed VDM was arrested on account of multiple petitions bordering on financial infractions.
While protesters had on Wednesday stormed the National Assembly complex, Amnesty International faulted the arrest of the activist, describing it as an outright attempt to silence dissenting voices.
The group stressed further that VeryDarkMan ‘s detention shows just how far the authorities in Nigeria can go to silence their critics.
