The Super Falcons’ historic feat at the just concluded 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has not only attracted millions of commendations but also saw President Bola Tinubu virtually address the Nigeria’s women national team in a video call.
Tinubu who was among the first prominent figures to congratulate the Super Falcons shortly after their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco at the Olympic Stadium, Rabat, addressed the team and coaching staff at their dressing room.
The President thanked the team for making Nigerians proud while pledging to celebrate them on their return.
He singled out the woman of the match, Esther Okoronkwo; Folashade Ijamilusi, who scored the leveler; and Jennifer Echejini, the super sub who sealed the Super Falcons comeback, for their impressive performance.
Tinubu also personally praised the team’s captain and player of the tournament, Rasheedat Ajibade.
He disclosed watching Esther’s penalty kick which marked the beginningof Super Falcons’ comeback after going two goals down in the first half.
“We are very very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits especially to the younger generation and we are all very happy.
“You will be celebrated. And I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team, including the Ministers and the officials.
“Esther, Shade. Jennifer, and my very very big regards to Rahseedat. I watched the penalty kick. That’s a very couargeous exercise.
“To set a 10th record victory is not a very small thing for the country and the continent herself. Safe journey home. Enjoy yourself, avoid injuries and God bless.” The President said.
Speaking on behalf of the team, Ajibade thanked Tinubu over the payment of their bonuses and appearances while promising to hand over the cup to him when they return.
“Thank you so much for the payment. We appreciate you Sir, and we are coming to give you the cup when we get back Sir.” She said.
Tinubu in response expressed his delight to receive the team immediately they return.
Recall that the President had earlier sent a delegate to Morocco to support the team for the final.
The delegate which include the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko; and former Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shuaibu, among others were all spotted in the dressing room with the team.
