At least 10 people have been killed with 15 others injured in a fresh attack by suspected armed herdsmen in Benue state.
The suspected herdsmen armed with AK47 rifles reportedly stormed Sai community in Mbajir Council Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area Benue state around 1am on Wednesday.
They opened fire sporadically at villagers who were asleep.
This threw the community into panic as some residents scampered for safety.
Recounting the attack, an indigene of the community, whose name was not disclosed, said that a total of 10 people has been found dead with 15 others injured.
The indigene, as quoted by the Vanguard, disclosed that several residents were still missing.
“From the information at our disposal, the attackers came from neighbouring Taraba State armed with AK-47 rifles.
“They attacked our community at about 1am when everybody had gone to bed and started shooting people in their sleep.
“The attack caused panic as people struggled to escape. About 10 persons were killed while over 15 sustained serious injuries.
‘Several others are still missing, and nobody knows whether they are alive or dead. Search efforts are ongoing.” He said.
The indigene added that most of the injured had been taken to the NKST Hospital in Sai for treatment, while those with critical injuries would be referred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.
