Police say a 14-year-old boy was killed in a sword attack in Hainault, east London, this morning
Five people were injured in total, including two police officers.
The other victims are in hospital but are not thought to have life-threatening injuries
Police say the 36-year-old suspect was arrested 22 minutes after the first call, after being Tasered.
The incident is not being treated as terror-related
Police were first called to reports of a vehicle driven into a house shortly before 07:00 BST Ch Supt Bell – speaking to reporters – says the boy’s family are being supported by local specialist officers.
“Everyone at the Met is keeping them in their thoughts at this unimaginably difficult time.”
He says the events of this morning are “horrific” and says he “can’t begin to imagine” how those affected must be feeling.
Bell adds that his officers are working to ascertain “the full facts as a priority”, and his thoughts are with the local community as that work’s carried out. Man arrested and police not seeking other suspects
A 36-year-old has been arrested and is in custody, Bell tells reporters, adding that police are not looking for any other suspects in relation to the incident.
He says the man was Tasered at the scene and arrested 22 minutes after the first call was made to police, shortly before 07:00 BST.
“We do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the wider public,” Bell adds. h Supt Bell says the incident in Hainault does not appear to have been linked to “any acts of terrorism”.
He confirms that five people were injured – three members of the public and two of his officers.
One, as Bell’s already said, was the boy who died. The two others “remain in hospital, but thankfully their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening,” he says.
Meanwhile, both officers are also still in hospital and require surgery, but their injuries do not appear to be life threatening at this stage, Bell adds.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, described this morning’s events as “devastating” and “appalling”.
“I’m sure I speak for the entire city when I say our thoughts are with this young child and his family,” Khan says.
