Calls for Speedy Amendment of Electoral Act

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has charged Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to brace themselves for intense electoral activities across the country in 2026.
Amupitan gave the charge during a consultative meeting with the CSOs on Wednesday.
As contained in a statement issued on the commission’s official X, INEC held that the engagement with the CSOs marked the beginning of its consultative meetings with key electoral stakeholders as part of preparations for forthcoming elections this year and the 2027 General Election.
While highlighting the successful Anambra off-cycle governorship election, Amupitan, according to the statement declared that 2026 will be a year of intense electoral activities.
He informed the CSOs of the upcoming FCT Area Council elections on Februbary 21, 2026, bye-elections in Rivers and Kano States, and governorship polls in Ekiti and Osun States.
The INEC Chairman also announced a nationwide voter revalidation exercise ahead of 2027.
He assured that the election timetable will be released in line with the law while calling for speedy amendment of the Electoral Act.
Responding, CSO representative Grace Alache Jerry pledged continued support for INEC but urged urgent National Assembly action to avoid setbacks in preparations for the 2027 General Election.
