The Acting American Consul General, JoEllen Gorg, has on Tuesday met with the Foundation of Investigative Journalism Founder (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo.
This was contained in an X post via the United States Diplomatics Mission in Nigeria handle @USinNigeria on Tuesday.
According to the post, press freedom is an integral component of a vibrant, functioning democracy.
She stressed the importance of of a free press in keeping the public informed and promoting transparency and accountability.

NPO reports that on the 29th of November, 2024, Soyombo was arrested by the Nigerian Army at an illegal oil bunkering site.
Prior to his arrest, Soyombo had repeatedly published reports on alleged illegal smuggling at the Nigerian borders, accusing the Nigerian Customs for enabling smuggling and illegal activities in the country.
