Oni Berates Police Over Ekiti Shooting

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Ekiti State, Engr. Segun Oni, has condemned the state Police Command over its poor handling of what he called “the ugly orgy of violence and mass shooting at the inauguration of the All Progressive Party (APC) Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti.”
He said the command of the police must tell the people of the state if it is overwhelmed by the orgy of violence.
“If the Police are helpless, they should say it,” he said in a statement made available to the NPO Reports on Wednesday.
He added that once the people know the police are not there for them “the people will know what to do to defend themselves.”
The SDP candidate expressed shock that more than 24 hours after the act of the alleged APC thugs, no statement of arrest of the perpetrators has yet been made.
The statement added, “We have been waiting to hear a statement of arrest from the Police in the last 24 hours but none has been issued. We are afraid that this barbaric show of violence will be swept under the carpet”
The former governor warned against giving citizens the latitude to resort to self-help in the event that the Police fails to defend them.
“We want the Police to know that if they fail to act, citizens can decide to take care of themselves in order to defend their peace” adding “this is what we do not encourage”
According to Oni, the violence displayed at the inauguration of the APC candidate has demonstrated to the general public “who they are and what they are”
That Tuesday’s show of shame and barbarism signposts what will characterise the APC campaign and their plan for the June 18 election, Oni said, adding that it will be unfortunate if the Police fails to see the clear hand writing or fail to nip the crisis in the bud before it snowballs into full scale anarchy.
He therefore, called on the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Morenikeji Adesina to rise to his calling and do the needful in order to retain the confidence of the people that the Police are capable of securing and defending them against the onslaught of thugs and marauders in the state.
Ekiti people, according to Oni, are peace loving. But that should not be taken for granted as any attempt to intimidate them will be resisted.
“They have long suffered suppression and subjugation in their own land and in the hands of those they thought were messiahs but who have turned out as deadpan. That is why they are saying ‘O to gee’ meaning enough is enough”
Speaking further, Oni said “we will continue to preach peace but certainly not at the detriment of our people’s lives and properties”
The Tuesday’s display connects with unconfirmed reports that Governor Kayode Fayemi and the APC were recruiting some drivers as thugs and fake military personnel to unleash terror and cause chaos on June 18 in order to thwart the will of the electorate.
The hired thugs were seen on Tuesday in white mini buses otherwise known as “Akoto” brandishing dangerous weapons and chanting BAO as they shoot sporadically.
