Former international soccer star, Mutiu Adepoju, has expressed nostalgia for his encounters with late goal poacher, Rasidi Yekini.
Yekini was a Nigerian star who played international soccer and scored Nigeria’s first World Cup goal in 1994.
He died 10 years ago in circumstances that are still considered to be controversial.
Celebrating him on Wednesday, Mutiu Adepoju, who played alongside the late Yekini, said it was a privilege to have played along with Yekini, whom he described as an enigma.
Writing on Wednesday, Adepoju said, “Baba Yekini, today marks the 10th year that you left us behind. Of course, you are no more but your legacy will continue to reign in our hearts forever.
“I will write it again here, it was a great honour playing with you – which I consider a big achievement on its own. You gave your 100% always.”
Saying that he and Nigerians will never forget the late star, Adepoju added that Yekini’s “class remains unmatched!”
He added, “Your greatness is so enormous that the rest of the world still reminisces over your exploits in the beautiful game.
“It was never a dull moment with you in camp as everyone’s ribs would be cracked at your jokes. You were never a contentious person and you saw everyone as your brother not minding their backgrounds.”
His professional career, which spanned more than two decades, was mainly associated with Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal, but he also played in six other countries.
