The Ondo State Government has directed that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and official school testimonials of 17 students be withheld following their involvement in a viral “sign-out” celebration that sparked public outrage on social media.
The affected students are from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School.
They were captured in a viral video engaging in disorderly conduct after completing the 2026 WASSCE.
Footage from the incident, which circulated widely on social media platforms, showed the graduating students tearing their school uniforms and chanting inappropriate slogans.
Following the incident, the Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology convened an emergency meeting at its headquarters in Akure with school administrators and other relevant stakeholders to address what it described as a serious breach of discipline.
Among the sanctions announced was the withholding of the WASSCE results and official school testimonials of the 17 identified students until further notice.
Their names will also be entered into the “black book” of their respective schools.
In addition, the Ministry directed all secondary school principals in the state to open a “black book” for documenting cases of student misconduct.
Senior officers in the affected schools also received official queries over what the Ministry described as inadequate supervision that allowed the celebrations to degenerate into lawlessness.
Students captured in the video who are not in the terminal class have also been directed to be expelled with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology urged parents to continually counsel their children against actions capable of jeopardising their future.
The Commissioner added that the sanctions would serve as a deterrent to other students who might engage in similar misconduct.
