Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has claimed that malaria is almost on the point of elimination in the state.
Abayomi made the claim while speaking at the 2025 Ministerial briefing held on Thursday.
The Commissioner, in a viral video shared on X, warned residence against self-diagnosing malaria, while dismissing the insinuations that most fever cases in the state are caused by malaria.
He explained that there are several causes of fever, urging the residents to consult a doctor for diagnosis as malaria has drastically reduced in the state.
“Everybody still thinks that every time you have malaria, it is fever. This is far from the truth. Most of the things that are causing fever now in Lagos are not malaria. And therefore, you should be checked by your medical professionals to look for other causes of fever.
“If one out of every 100 people who have fever is caused by malaria, then there are 99 other causes of the fever. And that is where we have helped professionals come in.
“It is lethargy to just assume that everybody with a fever has malaria. You are wrong in Lagos state. And therefore, we need to educate the public that malaria is almost on the point of elimination in Lagos.
“If you have fever or symptoms, body aches or other kinds of things, there is another reason, other causes of your fever.” Prof. Abayomi said.
