Human Rights group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has demanded the unconditional release of human rights activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, who was on Wednesday detained by the Nigerian Police.
Sowore had yesterday appeared at the Force Headquarters in Abuja following summon by the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit.
The invitation was reportedly based on a petition filed against him.
Recall that IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, had sued Sowore to court for cyber stalking and false publication over his label of the Police Chief as Illegal IGP.
The activist who arrived at the Force Headquarters with a travelling containing essential items in anticipation for likely detention was eventually detained.
In the wake of alleged assaults on the activist, Amnesty International in a statement issued on its official X handle called for his release as it condemned Sowore’s detention.
The group charged the Police authorities to listen to critics rather than resorting to abuse of power as it labelled the allegations against Sowore as politically motivated.
Amnesty held that the Sahara Reporters publisher had long been subjected to series of human rights violations with the group declaring him Prisoner of Conscience.
