Asks Electorate to Scrutinize Politicians’ Electioneering Words
- Safiu Kehinde
Former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has charged electorates to scrutinize politicians’ electioneering words as he speaks of failed campaign promises.
Jonathan gave the charge in a brief statement posted on his official Instagram handle on Tuesday.
The former President described a bad politician as one who campaigns like a shepherd but rules like a wolf.
He urged Nigerians to safeguard themselves from such politicians though adequate research, questioning, and courage to reject whatever they consider as deceit.
“A bad politician campaigns like a shepherd but rules like a wolf. They will feed you promises until you are full, then feed themselves until you are empty.
“The safeguard is not in their words but in your research, your questioning, and your courage to say ‘No’ when the mask is beautiful but the heart is rotten. 💚🕊️💚” The ex-President wrote.
Jonathan’s post is coming amid speculations of his possible return to contest for the presidency at the 2027 General Election.
Recall that the ex-President only spent one full term in office after completing the tenure of late President Musa Yar’Adua who he served under as Vice President before his death in May 2010.
Jonathan emerged winner of the 2011 general election and formally served as the Nigerian President for the next four years.
He however lost his re-election bid to late former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
Jonathan who had since kept a low profile in politics is now tipped to return with speculations of possible emergence as the flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2027 General election.
