The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike while granting the Federal Government a fresh one-month ultimatum to address its demands.
NPO Reported that the union had on the 12th of October declared a two-week “total and comprehensive” strike following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the government on September 28.
ASUU had accused the Federal Government of failure to address it’s demands concerning staff welfare .
The union had reiterated their demands for the implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, improvised staff welfare, and payment of salary arrears amongst others.
Meanwhile ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, on Wednesday announced the suspension in Abuja after separate meetings with the Yayale Ahmed-led committee and the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Jibrin Barau.
According to reports, Piwuna said the decision followed renewed promises from government officials and lawmakers to address the demands that triggered the strike.
He however warned that the union will resume the industrial action in no action is taken within the stipulated period.
“The union would resume the industrial action without prior notice if no concrete steps are taken within the next month.” Piwuna was quoted to have said.
