Voting exercise has commenced at the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has delegates elect the party’s next national leaders.
The delegates had converged at the Lekan Salami stadium in Ibadan, Oyo state, for the two-day event.
Having earlier raised some of the motions for the event with decisions, including the expulsion of 11 members of the party, made, the PDP leadership declared the commencement of the voting exercise for the next leaders of the party.
As earlier reported, the Elective National Convention was initially faced with stumbling blocks as some factional members of the party demanded for its suspension with several litigation cases filed.
Notable among the litigation case was the Muhammed Abdulrahman-led faction who called for its suspension on the basis that no congress was held in some states in the Southern region namely, Enugu, Imo, Akwa-Ibom, Abia, and Rivers states.
Also dragging the PDP leadership to court over the convention was former Jigawa state governor, Sule Lamido, who called for the suspension over the party’s refusal to acknowledge his declaration of interest in the race for the national leadership of the party.
While the Federal High Court had yesterday declared the suspension of the convention on Friday, an Oyo High Court however cleared the party to proceed with the convention.
The PDP had since shelved other litigations cases as the National Convention commenced with voting exercise now underway.
