The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the removal of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the GRA Police Division in Asaba, CSP Joseph Udoh, following allegations of extortion and harassment involving a good Samaritan.
This was disclosed by the Delta State Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, on Saturday.
He disclosed that the officer has been removed from office, sanctioned, and that the money collected from the complainant has been refunded.
“The guy has since been contacted, the DPO removed and sanctioned, and the money refunded,” Edafe said.
NPO reports that the development follows a public complaint by a resident, Tomi Akporoghene, who alleged that he was accused of murder and extorted after rushing a dying man, who collapsed on the road, to a hospital in Asaba.
Tomi had said he acted in good faith after consulting a medical doctor, but the victim was later confirmed dead on arrival.
According to him, the matter was reported at the GRA Police Station in Asaba, where the Good Samaritan was allegedly detained.
He said he had his statement taken under caution, and was forced to part with money as bail, despite the deceased’s family confirming that their son had an underlying medical condition.
