The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video alleging that women were beaten by security operatives during a protest at the Government House in Ilorin.
The police described the video as digitally manipulated, saying it does not reflect any real incident at the Government House.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, following widespread outrage on social media over the footage.
The video which surfaced on social media claimed that women protesters were assaulted by security personnel during a demonstration on December 27, 2025.
According to the police, a forensic analysis of the video confirmed that it was a manipulated composite.
The statement said the footage was deliberately edited by splicing unrelated scenes of violent confrontations with images from a separate and peaceful protest.
The police added that some images circulating online in connection with the alleged incident were taken from unrelated events that occurred several months earlier.
“This discrepancy forms a key part of the ongoing investigation,” the statement said.
The command also revealed that efforts to locate and interview the supposed victims shown in the video, particularly the two women featured prominently, have been unsuccessful.
Despite repeated public appeals, the police said they have received no official complaints from any individual or group regarding the alleged assault.
The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, as stressing the importance of prior notification and coordination before any public protest.
He explained that this procedure allows the Nigeria Police Force to provide adequate security, prevent criminal elements from hijacking demonstrations, and protect public safety while respecting citizens’ rights.
“The Kwara State Police Command remains committed to maintaining public order and safeguarding the fundamental rights of all citizens,” the statement said.
The police urged members of the public to verify information before sharing, warning against the spread of unverified or misleading content on social media
