Says Talks with Private Energy Company Underway
- Safiu Kehinde
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has revealed plan to detach the entire state from the national grid.
Otti disclosed ongoing talks with a private energy company at the Netherlands for the installation of a 125 megawatts power generating facility to improve the electricity supply across the state.
The governor made this known during a public address on Friday.
He revealed that his Commissioner for Power and Publicity Utility is currently in the European country to strike a deal with the private firm.
“My Honourable Commissioner for Power and Public Utility is in the Netherland negotiating that.
“Even though it is a private enterprise, but then we are interested to support them to grow because it is all for us.
“If we have another 125 megawatts we will just take it straight to Umuahia and detach the entire state from the national grid. That is our aim.” He said.
The development is coming amid controversies surrounding the Abia state governor’s performance.
Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, had triggered the controversy following his comment about Otti’s performance which he claimed to be unimpressive and below standard required of good governance.
This had however sparked outrage from some Abia indigenes who defended the governor while some backed Sowore, sharing clips of flooded communities and bad roads in the state.
