Slams Critics of 2026 Electoral Act
- Safiu Kehinde
President Bola Tinubu has on Friday reiterated his stance against a one-party state as he affirmed his belief in credible and healthy opposition.
Tinubu noted that democracy thrives on healthy competition and constructive engagement among political actors.
The President stated this at the Eighth National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
He said such engagement was essential for improving governance, strengthening statecraft, and advancing national development across democratic societies.
“Let me reiterate, especially to those who often lament and misunderstand us: we do not seek a one-party state.
“Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition.
“As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition—one that can challenge, question and help refine policies.
“That is how statecraft improves, and good governance is achieved. That is how nations advance.” Tinubu said.
The President however slammed the criticism of the 2026 Electoral Act by opposition parties, describing them as disservice to Nigerians.
He maintained that the act, which came under heavy criticism over alleged removal of the mandatory electronic transmission of election results, passed through the crucible of legislative scrutiny, including public hearings, before its passage.
“While we welcome criticism, the constant attacks by opposition groups on the Electoral Act 2026 are a disservice to the Nigerian people.
“It is public knowledge that the processes leading to the amendment of the 2022 Electoral Act passed through the crucible of legislative scrutiny, including public hearings.
“The Electoral Act was passed by the National Assembly, elected by the Nigerian people in accordance with the 1999 Constitution.
“The Act reflects our collective quest as a nation to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule.
“Therefore, our commitment is to uphold the rule of law, conduct credible elections and protect the integrity of our elections, and continue building a stronger, secure, and united nation.” He said.
On the APC National Convention, Tinubu described the event as a defining moment in the party’s history, offering an opportunity to renew commitment to its founding ideals and national objectives.
“This convention is not merely a gathering; it is a defining chapter in the story of our democracy and our party.” The President said.
He said the APC was founded as a platform for national transformation, not just a vehicle for political ambition and electoral victories.
“We must also remind ourselves that this party is not merely a vehicle specially built to carry ambitious politicians to electoral victories.
“It was founded as a vehicle for national transformation, a home for anybody who wants to build a Nigeria where governance works; institutions function; and opportunities abound for all citizens.”
The president emphasised unity as the party’s greatest strength, warning against divisions driven by personal ambition and internal conflicts.
“Our greatest strength has never been in our size, but in our unity. We must guard against ego overriding ideology.”
Tinubu urged party members to remain disciplined and focused, stressing that internal cohesion was critical to sustaining political success and national relevance.
He called on delegates, aspirants, and stakeholders to conduct themselves with integrity and respect throughout the convention proceedings.
Tinubu also paid tribute to the party’s founding members and late leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Let us honour those who built this platform with courage and conviction, and ensure their vision is not diminished,” he said.
On governance, Tinubu said his administration had remained focused on delivering reforms despite global economic challenges and domestic pressures.
He noted progress in infrastructure development, tax reforms, social investment programmes, and efforts to strengthen national security.
“The sacrifices we are making today are laying the foundation for a more prosperous Nigeria tomorrow.”
Tinubu said Nigeria had recorded improvements in key economic indicators, including declining inflation, rising investor confidence, and sustained economic activity growth.
He added that reforms in the oil and gas sector had attracted renewed foreign investment and strengthened the country’s fiscal outlook.
The president acknowledged ongoing challenges, including electricity supply constraints and legacy debts in the power sector.
He said the planned establishment of the Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO) would help improve transmission capacity and boost electricity supply nationwide.
Tinubu also addressed young people and women, urging greater participation in politics and governance at all levels.
“To the youth, you are not just the future but the hope of this nation. We must open more doors for your participation.
“To women, your role is essential. A party that empowers women is stronger and more resilient.”
He commended the Convention Planning Committee and party leaders for organising what he described as a successful and impactful event.
Tinubu urged newly elected party officials to lead with integrity, fairness, and commitment to the party’s ideals and democratic values.
“The future of our party and Nigeria’s democracy depends on your leadership. Lead with courage, integrity, and vision,” he said.
