An elderly man identified as Jitu Munda has left local residents of Odisha, India, stunned as he exhumed his late sister’s remains and took them to a bank to prove she was dead in order to withdraw her savings.
Jitu reportedly took the daring decision after been repeatedly denied access to the deceased 20,000 Rupees saved at a local bank.
The bank officials insisted on proper documentation before processing the request for the access to the account of the woman who died in January.
Frustrated after multiple failed attempts, Jitu dug up his sister’s grave and brought her skeleton to the bank as proof of her death, leaving staff and customers in shock.
Videos shared on Instagram on Tuesday showed the half-naked elderly man with the skeletal remains of his sister partially concealed in a sack and strapped on his shoulder as he marched to the bank.
According to reports, the situation was worsened by his lack of formal education, as he struggled to understand the required process for accessing funds from a deceased person’s account.
Police later intervened, describing the incident as a communication gap between the man and the bank officials.
Authorities confirmed that steps would be taken to help him access the funds through proper procedures.
The remains were eventually returned and reburied under police supervision.
It was also gathered that the person listed as nominee on the account had died, leaving the man as the only surviving claimant.
