The Ekiti State Police Command’s Commissioner, Abayomi Shogunle, has unveiled plan to surveil the social media space and arrest peddlers of unofficial election at the 2026 governorship election in the state.
Shogunle made this known during a press conference held earlier today ahead of the Saturday’s election.
The Police Commissioner in his address to newsmen maintained that the election results expected to be circulated are those confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“We are going to be monitoring the media space.
“There are certain conducts that the electoral act has stipulated as offences part of which is announcing unofficial results.
“It is INEC that has the statutory power to declare and election results and it is what INEC has declared that everybody will push out.
“We are going to be looking for people that will be declaring election results that are not correct.” He said.
On Police effort in addressing likelihood of voter’s apathy on account of the insecurity situation in some parts of the state, Shogunle said confidence has been built among residents about the safety of the polling units.
“We’ve done everything needed to be done to build confidence and this is being confirmed by CSOs and members of the public.” The police chief said.
Speaking on reason behind the non-disclosure of the total number of police to be deployed during the election, Shogunle said the figures will be communicated at the appropriate time.
“We will roll out figures at the appropriate time. We don’t want to roll out figures for somebody to think that ‘for them to bring in this Force, it is because this.’
“We have identified things that are making certain things to happen, and we don’t want to do it.
“We have identified things that we need to do to get certain outcome. Those are the things we are focusing on.” He said.
