All eyes are on Ekiti, the approximately 4.4million populated South-West state of Nigeria as voters go to the poll today to elect a new governor.
Incumbent Biodun Oyebamiji, who is standing election on the platform of the All Progressive Congress is confronted by at least two other major contenders from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). These are Oluwole Oluyede (PDP) and Dare Abejide (ADC).
Other contestants for the seat include Opeyemi Falegan of the Accord Party; Oyebanji Olajuyin of the Labour Party; Blessing Abegunde of the New Nigerian Peoples Party; Ayodeji of the Action Democratic Party (ADP); Samuel Akande of the AAC; Olaniyi Ayodele of the PRP; Victor Adetunji of the Zenith Labour Party; Olu Omotoso of the Action Alliance; Joseph Anifowose of the Allied Peoples Movement and Ayodele Osinkoku of the Young Peoples Party.
Osinkoku had however withdrawn from the race becoming the senatorial candidate of the PDP for Ekiti North Central.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, 1,059,360 voters were registered in the 16 local government areas of the state.
Voters will decide the fate of the winner in the 2,445 polling units of the 177 wards in the state.
