The House of Representatives has withdrawn its earlier constitutional amendment bill seeking to establish state police as it resolved to adopt the proposal transmitted by President Bola Tinubu.
Lawmakers at the green chamber’s plenary session on Tuesday, resolved to adopt the Executive-sponsored bill which was considered similar to the withdrawn constitutional amendment bill for the creation of state police.
Following debate on the general principles of the bill, the lawmakers passed it for the first and second readings.
It was subsequently referred by the Speaker of the green chamber, Tajudeen Abass, to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative scrutiny.
At the committee stage, lawmakers are expected to examine key aspects of the proposed legislation, including the structure, funding and operational framework for state police.
The committee will also assess the constitutional implications of devolving greater policing powers to state governments.
Upon completion of its review, the committee is expected to present its report to the House for further consideration.
The bill will then proceed through additional legislative stages as part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process before any final adoption.
