The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo.
Oladipo, who was also a former Politics Editor of PUNCH Newspapers, died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.
His death came as a shock to colleagues, friends and associates, as he was reportedly in his usual state of health earlier in the day.
According to reports, Oladipo had gone to the gym with his wife on Tuesday morning before proceeding with his other engagements.
He was also active on social media and made his final post in the afternoon at about 2:50pm, few hours before his death.
The veteran journalist later became unwell while at his office and attempted to seek medical attention.
Although preliminary reports suggested that he may have suffered a heart attack, details surrounding the exact cause of his death were still unclear as of Wednesday.
He spent more than 28 years in the media, building a career that cut across newspaper journalism, newsroom leadership and digital publishing.
He was particularly known for his years at PUNCH Newspapers, where he rose to become Politics Editor before venturing into online journalism.
Oladipo subsequently established The Eagle Online, a publication that covers a wide range of issues, including politics, business, crime, sports, entertainment.
He was part of the group of publishers involved in the early development of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), an organisation he later led as president.
In 2025, Oladipo served as President of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, which was established to promote cooperation and sustainability among media practitioners.
