An Ukrainian drone strike has hit the Moscow Oil Refinery in southeastern Moscow, triggering a major fire at the facility as a wave of overnight attacks hit the Russian capital and surrounding region.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that a drone struck a facility within the refinery complex in the Kapotnya area, although he said there were no reported casualties at the plant.
In a video seen by NPO Reports, the strike sparked a large fire at the refinery.
Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyev said Russian air defences intercepted 249 drones overnight, while several residential buildings and a warehouse caught fire.
Similarly, a drone struck a building near one of the city’s boulevards.
Sobyanin later said 450 drones heading towards Moscow had been intercepted, describing the incident as an “unprecedented attack”.
Vorobyev said a 44-year-old woman died in Sofyino after a drone struck a three-storey residential building. Five other people, including two children, were injured in the incident.
Another person, described as an elderly man, was killed in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo district after a drone hit a private residence, according to the governor.
Videos circulating on social media showed explosions in the sky over the Moscow region.
The attacks also disrupted air travel in the Russian capital.
Sheremetyevo Airport, Moscow’s largest airport, introduced temporary restrictions, while Vnukovo Airport suspended all arrivals and departures. The restrictions were lifted by Sunday morning, although passengers were warned that some flights could remain delayed.
Ukraine also reported casualties following Russian attacks on its territory.
A Ukrainian official said eight people, including three children, were killed in Russian strikes across the Kyiv and Sumy regions on Saturday.
In Fastiv, Kyiv region, a woman and her two young children were killed after a Russian attack, according to regional authorities. Several private homes were also damaged.
A child injured in a separate strike in Vyshhorod, north of Kyiv, later died in hospital, Kyiv regional head Tymur Tkachenko said.
