Amidst various intra-party crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday flew into Enugu in the heart of the South-East geo-political zone.
The intent of his journey according to Atiku, is further cement all forces within the party in that axis of the country.
The PDP 2023 presidential candidate, who arrived in the Akanu Ibiam International Airport on Tuesday morning, is expected to attend the South-East Stakeholders Zonal Meeting at the Baze Event Centre, Independence Layout Enugu.
The event is aimed at uniting all Ndigbo for PDP and presentation of their son, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta Governor, who is Atiku’s running mate.
As early as N10am, the venue was already filled with party faithful from the five states in the South-East, awaiting Atiku’s arrival at the venue.
Some members of the zone’s PDP caucus like the National Vice Chairman, Ali Odefa, PDP executives, Rep Tobi Okechukwu, representing Oji-River Federal Constituency, and members of the Enugu State Assembly, were already seated for the programme.
Also seated for the event were prominent PDP stakeholders, including the party’s former spokesman, Oliseh Metuh, ex-Senate President, Anyim Pius Anyim, Mr. Hyde Onuagulichi, and Sen. Uche Ekwunife, amongst others.
Atiku and the party are battling with internal cohesion in the face of the disagreement chiefly over the continued occupation of the position of national chairmanship of the party by Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.
The camp of the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, had insisted on the removal of Ayu as a condition for peace to reign in the party.
