The Academic Staff Union of Universities has called for a total strike as it said that the Federal Government does not appear to be serious on its negotiations.
The one-month warning strike of the union has entered its fourth week.
The University of Calabar Chairman of the union, Dr. John Edor, stated this in his assessment of the ongoing industrial action.
Edor said, “The only option is continued industrial action until everything is sorted out. In fact, the strike should be sustained until all the issues raised by ASUU are completely resolved so that strikes will not become recurrent or yearly.”
The union has been collating votes from different chapters of the party in order to arrive at a final decision whether to continue with the strike or suspend it after the expiration of the one month warning.
However, negotiations between the Federal Government and the union have been stalled due to disagreements.
The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige, had last week said that the government does not have the kind of money that the union is demanding for.
