Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo on Sunday admitted to widespread reports of extortions at the nation’s airports.
Keyamo said he has been inundated by calls by concerned citizens who have been victims of the extortion.
The Minister said the anomaly has assumed the dimension of a national crisis that has attracted the attention of the National Security Adviser to the President Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
Keyamo in a tweet on Sunday described those engaged in the act as“unscrupulous persons who give all of us a bad image.”
He said the agencies involved in this menace are not under the control of the Aviation Ministry, admitting however that “they are stationed at our airports.”
Revealing efforts at the background to sort the issue, he said “I have been working closely with other Ministers, arms of government and agencies who are responsible for these agencies and a solution is in sight soon.”
He said he and others are working under the coordination of the “National Security Adviser who called a meeting a few days ago on this issue and we shall soon unveil practical steps being taken to stem this ugly tide..”
