All eyes are on Edo State South South Nigeria as over two million voters go to the polls today to elect a new governor.
Whoever emerges as the winner among three major candidates will succeed incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki who is finishing a second term in office.
Senator Monday Okpebholo is the candidate of the All Progressive Congress.
Asue Ighodalo is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party while former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Olumide Akpata is flying the flag of the Labour Party.
In all, 17 candidates are vying for the seat while three of them are very popular.
NPO Reports that today’s election appears another proxy battle and not only for the contestants.
For instance, former Governor of Edo state and serving senator Adam Oshiomhole seeks to restore his relevance in the state’s politics having lost to Obaseki whom he helped brought to power 8 years ago.
Things went sour with the duo with Obaseki leaving the APC to seek reelection in the PDP.
For Obaseki, a loss for Ighodalo will mean end of his political relevance in the state.
