There was commotion Tuesday afternoon in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, as the popular Wuse Market went up in flames.
There were fears that goods worth billions of Naira might be consumed.
The incident forced many people in the area to scamper to safety.
The cause of the fire outbreak could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report, but the incident abruptly ended the business of the day around the Market Area.
People were seen scampering for safety which eventually caused vehicular gridlock around the area, firefighters and security operatives have immediately mobilized to the scene
Policemen, who arrived at the market, barricaded the entrance to prevent people from moving into the markets. They were seen shooting sporadically and firing tear gas into the atmosphere.
A section of the market, specifically the car park at the northern side of the entrance had been engulfed with thick smoke that rented the air.
Some vehicles in the car park have been burnt already. People inside the market are also seen forcing their way out by jumping the perimeter fence.
