Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from role as the Adamawa State’s Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.
This is coming days after the defection of the state governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
NPO Reported that Finitiri had last week Friday formally defected to the APC.
The governor had explained that the move was not motivated by personal ambition but by the need to reposition Adamawa for greater national relevance and access to federal collaboration.
With the Fintiri’s defection to the ruling party, it became expedient for members of his cabinet to follow him.
The governor had also declared that the defection would be carried out with the full political structure of the state, including the 226 wards and 21 local government areas, as well as elected and appointed officials.
However, Atiku’s name was noticeably missing in the list of the cabinet members who expressed readiness to defect with the governor.
This had since raised speculation of his possible resignation, coupled with the severed impact of Fintiri’s defection to the political influence of his father in Adamawa.
The ex-Vice President’s son made his decision on Monday as he tendered his resignation letter to the Secretary to the State Government.
As contained in the letter dated March 2nd, 2026, Atiku expressed his gratitude to Fintiri for the opportunity granted to him to serve under his administration.
He also expressed his gratitude to his parents for their support and prayers.
“Today, I formally announced my resignation as Honourable Commissioner for Works and Energy Development, Adamawa State, after the privilege of serving for seven years.
“Serving in this strategic capacity has been one of the most significant honours of my public life. I am profoundly grateful to His Excellency, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Executive Governor of Adamawa State, for the trust, confidence, and rare opportunity granted to me to contribute meaningfully to the infrastructural and energy advancement of our dear state. I remain appreciative of his leadership and the support extended to me throughout my tenure.
“I express heartfelt gratitude to my parents, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar and Hajiya Titi Atiku Abubakar for their moral guidance, prayers, and blessings, which strengthened me throughout this journey of service.” He wrote.
Atiku further expressed his gratitude to the officials of the Works and Energy ministry for their resilience and dedication while also appreciating the support of the people of Jada, his hometown.
“My sincere appreciation goes to the Permanent Secretaries of Works and Energy, the directors, engineers, and the entire staff of the Ministry for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication to advancing critical infrastructure across the state.
“Together, we worked with commitment and purpose in the interest of our people.
“I am especially grateful to the great people of Jada for their steadfast prayers, encouragement, and unwavering support during my time in office. Your faith and solidarity have meant more than words can express.” The son of the ex-Vice President said.
He however held that his resignation does not imply an end to his commitment to public service.
Atiku pledged to continue broader developmental engagement and contribute to the growth of Adamawa state.
“This decision does not mark the end of my commitment to public service.
“Rather, it signals the beginning of a new phase of broader developmental engagement and continued contribution to the unity, growth, and progress of Adamawa State.
“I remain steadfast in my loyalty to the shared vision of a stronger and more prosperous Adamawa.” He added.
