The Independent National Electoral Commission has tasked political parties and their supporters in the FCT to ensure that the February 12 Area Councils poll is violence free. Mrs. Zainab Gbefwi, the INEC Electoral Officer in Kuje Area Council, made the call on Monday in Kuje during a stakeholders meeting in preparation for the councils election. Mali on Monday condemned sanctions imposed on the country’s military authorities by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and responded by recalling its ambassadors to the organisation’s member states. On Sunday, Radio France Internationale reported that ECOWAS countries had imposed tough sanctions against the military authorities of Mali. West African states reportedly decided to freeze Mali’s assets in the Central Bank of West African States, close borders with Mali and suspend trade transactions with the country, with the exception of medical and essential goods. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has arrested 90 persons at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. A statement by General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Henrietta Yakubu, described them as touts carrying out nefarious activities. The spokesperson noted that the raid was part of efforts to rid the nation’s airports of “touting and extortion”. 35-Year Old to Die by Hanging for Robbery An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has sentenced a 35 year-old man, Oriyomi Felix, to death by hanging for armed robbery. The convict was tried on a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery. Venezuelan opposition candidate Sergio Garrido emerged the winner of an election in the state of Barinas, following a court-ordered rerun of the poll due to last year’s opposition win. Garrido, running for the opposition MUD coalition, gained 55.4 per cent of the vote, according to data released by the CNE electoral authority on Monday. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Monday issued a warning over Lassa fever cases, which it said had risen to 4,632 and 102 deaths. The centre’s warning is comings amidst growing cases of coronavirus infections. The NCDC, in its latest advisory, announced the possibility of Lassa fever presenting malaria-like symptoms such as fever, headache, sore throat, general body weakness, cough among others.
