The bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Awutseye, who was assaulted by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh has opened up on what transpired.
NPO Reports that the driver was to deliver some food to the lawmaker’s residence in Maitama, Abuja when he was instructed to bring them inside the compound, a request he pointed out was against car hailing company’s policy.
This, however, led to the lawmaker assaulting, threatening and verbally attacking the driver as seen in the viral video.
According to Mr. Awutseye, he got an order from Bolt to deliver a package and on getting to the address which he said was snail, he saw the lawmaker seated few metres from where he parked.
After greeting him, he said the lawmaker did not respond making him assume that he wasn’t the recipient of the package.
“Since he didn’t answer, the next thing for me was to call the person that has the package.
“I dialled the phone number, it rang and the next thing I heard was “Are you stupid?” “Are you mad?” “Bring my stuff for me!”
“I was not happy the way he spoke to me because I was just doing my job and I told him that all these he was saying to me were unwarranted.
“Normally I’m not supposed to bring this thing to you, you are supposed to come out and pick it yourself. That was the only thing that got him angry.” He said.
Speaking in a video with social media activist, Martins Otse, fondly known as Very Dark Man, he said he was taken to the police station by some police officers on the order of the lawmaker.
“They bundled me to the station, I wanted to drive but they said no.
“When they drove me down to the station they said I should go inside. I had calls, they didn’t allow me to pick my calls.
“They asked me what happened. They didn’t ask me, they were asking people that were not there, the police officer said I went to the honourable’s house and I was fighting the honourable, I kept mute.”
Explaining further, the driver stated that the matter was transferred to the crime department and on getting there, the officer in charge said he had to hear from both parties.
Following this, the IPO reportedly said he was going for investigation at the honourable’s house after which he returned in two hours and queried him for recording the honourable’s actions
“The IPO now changed the narrative and I asked, is there a part of the law that says I cannot record what somebody is doing to me. He was becoming a threat to me and I had to take evidence.”
“They gave me a form to fill to write my own statement when the honourable came and he started shouting,” he recalled
The driver however said that his car is still being held at the station while the lawmaker was not detained.
