- As CBN Cries Out It’s Fake News
The wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha has shared news of a new deadline for Nigerians to use their old N1000 and N500 notes.
This was contained in a statement credited to the Central Bank of Nigeria which was purportedly signed by Osita Nwanibosi, Director of Corporate Communications of the CBN.
The statement read, “Due to the current and unpleasant situation happening in Nigeria, in line with Mr President. After having a closed meeting with him on the 20th of February,2023, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been directed to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes and this is expected to circulate as legal tender for 70 days up to May 1, 2023.
“Members of the public should therefore continue to spend the old notes.”
The statement also urged media practitioners are advised to PLEASE spread out this helpful information to the public.
However, the CBN said the statement did not emanate from it. Asking Nigerians to be wary of fake news, many Nigerians have started commenting on the development.
The wife of the President had shared the information on all her social media pages.
As at the time of this report, there was no response from the First Lady.
A presidency official who was contacted by the NPO Reports few minutes after the information was shared said he could not comment.
Asked if he was aware whether the social media pages of the First Lady were hacked, the official who would prefer not to be named “I wouldnt know.”
However, at about 11:55am, the post was pulled down from her Instagram account. But this was not until after many had reacted and even screenshot the post.
