Former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as he tendered his resignation letter to his Ward Chairman.
The opposition party’s 2023 Presidential candidate had in the letter dated 14th of July 2025 formally withdrawn his membership from the PDP.
Recall that he had championed the opposition coalition group which last month adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as it’s party.
His formation of the coalition party alongside other factional member of the PDP while carrying the party’s membership card had raised speculations over possible defection from the party under which he served as Vice President for eight years and contested for Presidency twice.
As contained in the letter issued to the Chairman of the PDP Jada Ward 1, Adamawa state, Atiku expressed his gratitude to the party for the opportunities given to him.
He however expressed his heartbreak over his decision to defect from the party.
Atiku attributed his resignation to the irreconcilable differences that have emerged in the party.
The letter read; “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the Party.
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life. As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.
“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken. which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.
“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.”
