Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu.
NPO Reports that the resignation might not be unconnected with the rumoured governorship ambition of the minister in his home state of Bauchi.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.
According to information gathered by NPO Reports, Tuggar submitted his resignation letter and plans to contest the Bauchi governorship under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Although, his resignation follows a presidential directive issued through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, earlier in March, mandating all political appointees seeking elective offices to step down from their positions.
The order requires ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, and heads of federal agencies with political ambitions to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The policy aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which is designed to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure a level playing field as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
