An Islamic cleric and Chief Imam of Abdul-Rafiu’ Masjid, Rotimi Williams Estate, Lagos, Mohammed Umar Yuguda, has said that it is criminal for anyone to attack trucks carrying food and steal their items.
The cleric while admonishing Muslims never to join in what he called the criminal act, said those caught in the act should be in jail should everything be working properly in Nigeria.
Saying that the Nigerian economic situation has not reached a level at which residents must claim hunger as a reason for stealing foods meant for sale, he reminded those who have been doing it that they have only put many fellow citizens into financial difficulties.
“The foods they loot are the sweat of some other people. Some people are the traders who invest their money in the sale and distribution of those food items.
“How then can you justify your actions in the sight of Allah? It is unfair, unjust and does not show you fear Allah,” the Imam said
The Imam said if those who are physically challenged are struggling to make ends meet on their own efforts, he sees no reason why able-bodied men and women should be involved in attacks on trucks distributing food items across the country.
He called on the government to ensure that the structure of governance works properly to ensure an end to the orgy of violence in the country.
